Suzanne Vega – Beauty & Crime (7/10)

suzanne.vega_beauty.crime_cd.cover2007

It took 6 years for SUZANNE VEGA to make this half an hour CD but calm panache and detailed imageries make up for the brevity. These are some wonderful songs here. It is deeply personal and frank, addressing topics such as the death of her brother, divorce and love for her daughter.

Her voice still carries that wonderful husk as it rides, most times, atop trotting beats accompanied by skilful guitars. And it flies us into her adopted city, New York, where clever songwriting observes and discusses. New York is the woman, legs spread, inviting us all for conversations with its colourful people.

“Out on the corner by the Fireman’s Monument, this was the place where all the fatherless teenagers went. Well the wind kicks in the smell of rain, the kids are gone but the soul remains. The graffiti’s gone and the walls complain, the flowers go but the earth must still remain.”

Provocative and classy, Beauty & Crime is good as a whole but ‘Zephyr & I’, ‘Pornographer’s Dream’ and ‘Ludlow Street’ ‘are that extra special. It’s contemporary rather than alternate like her famous debut Solitude Standing was. It probably doesn’t belong in this rock site yet gets an appreciative nod and a good review because SUZANNE VEGA, simply, writes damn well.

WM: With the incredible journey you’ve travelled, what was the biggest lesson you learnt?
Steve Newman: Humility & courage are two of them.

WM: What was the best musical moment for you and where was it?
Steve Newman: Too many but Japan was great. We played the first World Music with Mori Kante, Miriam Makeba & Salif Keita.

WM: Which South African city or town has embraced you the most the past decade?
Steve Newman: Several.

WM: And if you had a choice of one place to settle outside of SA, where would it be and why?
Steve Newman: A fantasy tropical land with lots of fruit, no government or tax. I love living here.

WM: Is your music more an interpretation of your own story or the stories of others you’ve witnessed?
Steve Newman: Both, i’m sure.

WM: Do the tragedies that happened to Gita Boloi, Lucky Dube and so many others reflect the future of South Africa?
Steve Newman: Tragedies like these happen anywhere.

WM: The worse the world gets in many respects, the less protest music there appears to be. How political should the artist be?
Steve Newman: As political as they choose.

WM: Which emerging, local artists are shining the strongest light with their talent?
Steve Newman: Watch out for Cape Town pianist, Kyle Shepherd.

WM: You’ve been involved in many collaborations. What makes you enjoy it?
Steve Newman: Learning to co-operate & compromise is essential in this world.

WM: When does the new album arrive and what can we expect?
Steve Newman: There are two :- In The Clouds with Greg Georgiades(guitar, oud, bouzouki) & Ashish Joshi (tabla) and All in 1 with Errol Dyers (guitar, flute, harmonica, bass, percussion) & Hilton Schilder (keys, guitar, bows, flute, percussion, bass). Available at gigs or download from www.thatgig.com
